The insignia appears to be much later than 1939 -- it was still the 
"bullseye" roundel then.

The Type A roundel (red-white-blue) was replaced by the Type B 
(red-blue) from March to October 1939. The photo, taken shortly before 
the war, shows aircraft from No.65 Squadron, then based at Hornchurch. 
K9906 was flown by Robert Stanford Tuck.
